How Should I Buy A Phone?

Once upon a time in the late 19th century when the science of ergonomics was poor since gadgets were not globally adopted, Those times were the times when the brains performed at the fullest!
But now we have a supplement to EVERYTHING (even human's private parts)!
We human beings used our "gifted" brains to invent things from non living stuffs just to get ourselves outsmarted !!
Making way into a new category called GADGETS under which comes phones. Today phones top the list as the most adopted mobile gadget all around the planet. The plethora of possibilities a phone can do and the power within its anorexic bezels...its just amazing.
Since today's brains are put in dilemma by so many tech websites giving  reviews and stupid youtube videos which exaggerate and potray the phone as the best and we getting succumbed to those stuffs and naively buying some stupid
phone. You and only you know which phone you need and to realize that and to buy a proper phone, All that is required is some basic knowledge.

So without any digression,
How  Do You Choose a  Phone?
Ask yourself why do you need a phone? and choose the budget accordingly.
Do not worry, There is a phone for every budget. There is no perfect phone. If there was one then there would not have been any competition and people would buy that without second thoughts. So while choosing you will need to sacrifice on a few features but on the good side you would have got ton of other features.

Things To Consider,

Design
Design is the most important thing to see for, because every tom dick and harry will see the design first and design of the phone makes the first impression. Moreover it is how well it is designed to fit in ur palm and how best it feels each time you hold it.
According to me the HTC one is the best designed phone till date!

HTC one

Size/dimensions
There all sorts of people in the world. Its upto you to decide which phone size you are comfortable with.
obviously the bigger the size the more powerful phones you get because there is room for more (categorized into phablets).
Ask me, i would recommend a phone of screen size 4.7" or 5" because it needs to fucking fit in the pocket.

Processor
This is the most debatable upon topic. People today are mind fucked about the number of cores a phone has! Trust me its not at all about the cores!
Let me explain you how processor works as simple as possible.
Imagine you have to cook a dish and you hire a cook. He finishes the task in 3 minutes. But you have more money and you hire another cook. So now there are 2 cooks, While one chops the vegetables (for the same dish) the other one cooks. The time required to complete the dish is not halved but reduced, Say 2 minutes 30 seconds. you have more money and you hire another cook. He has no job to do as the other 2 cooks is doing all the work but still you have to pay for the third cook.
This is exactly how a processor works. Here the cook is the number of cores and the dish is the process the processor has to do.

Octa core Processors Are They Necessary?
As of now NO. But definitely in the near horizon (keeping in mind the pace of growth). But as of today its a big NO. Even if it is present in a phone. It wont be used up to its potential and will only act as a marketing strategy for companies.

RAM (Random Access Memory)
While you are running a program the processor need to access the memory where the program is stored. when you fire up a program it is shifted to RAM so that processor can access the program and also randomly any number of programs launched. so more the RAM the better. There wont be much lags. and multitasking would be great with more of RAM.

Internal Memory
You be the judge here.
Phones today come with internal memory of 4,8,16,32,64,128 gb of which some space will be occupied by ROM( read only memory). ROM contains the firmware or the software running the phone.

Battery
Battery depends on various number of factors. It mainly depends on the OS running on the phone and YOU.
It's in your hands how well you use the juice in your phone. if you are power user, Carry a portable charge.
the higher the mAh the more juice you will get.

Camera
It's a common misconception that the more the number of megapixels the better is the snap. Clarity and depth of the photo depends on the megapixel. But for the snap to be better the megapixel should be high (8 mp is good to go) and sensor should be large. Photos taken from phones are good enough for social postings, but if you are serious about photography buy a DSLR instead or today's phones comes with add on accessories like the lumia 1020's camera grip which turns the phone into a point and shoot camera. Sony offers NFC lens which connects to your phone and takes control of the touch controls and turns it into a camera.

Display
The display of the phone is scaled with a term called ppi (pixels per inch), The more the ppi the better is the display. Forget not it takes up more battery also. But if you own a full HD phone you can not shift back to a display of lower ppi.
Question is do you actually need a full HD phone?
NO. You don't need a phone with high ppi. You will only notice the difference when you compare the phone with a higher ppi. Obviously the phone's display will look dull.

Operating System
There are many mobile Operating Systems. But the prominent ones are

iOS
The operating system for apple devices. iOS 7 is the latest version. This platform is considered most efficient in handling battery and performance. The end user also gets the best camera experience and a personal assistant called siri. There is ton of apps in apple app store. iOS is better known for its simplicity. But in the downside there are very few iOS devices available and all the phones available are at max 4" screen which is really sad. and it isn't customizable. Moreover the price of iphones is high and with lower budgets you will end up with outdated models.

iOS 7

Android
This operating system is owned by google. Android 4.4 kitkat is the latest version and there is loads of good things to talk about android. The biggest win it has over iOS is the number of choices people get. There is an android phone for everyone. The level of customization is very high and with play store having over one million app, You cant ask for more. Android gives you the best Google experience. Google apps like Google search, maps, Google now are integrated right into the OS.

Android Kitkat 4.4

Windows Phone
Windows Phone OS is owned by microsoft. It is currently making big in some countries. Windows phone 8 is the latest  release some like the UI it offers as it has live tiles which is really cool. But it is not customizable. it is more like a locked ecosystem and there are not too many apps in the store.

Windows Phone 8

Concluding, its just a phone, whichever phone you buy ultimately you will end up doing the same stuff and every phone will be able to handle whatever you throw at it, Its just the matter of how fast it does it. But the thing is.... It does the job.

Be Wise And Just Go Buy A  Phone!

BENCHMARKING, EXPLAINED!

Benchmarking is gaining popularity these days with leaks of benchmarking results of popular phones and
it has also become an add on for an argument when its between two phones and has boosted up one's confidence while buying a phone if that device performs better in benchmarking.
some go by numbers, while some ignore these results.

What Exactly Is Benchmark Results?

Benchmarking is a gauge to measure the performance of "something" and hence comparing the results with other "things" falling in the same category. These "things" might be anything, It can be a company's output/performance, Petroleum quality, Computer speed and similarly phones.Since phones now are a powerhouse and there is plethora of possibilities that one can do today with a phone, Benchmarking of such phones is natural as user is curious to know how their phone performs against the competiton.

Summarizing, Benchmarking is a standardized tool to measure performance of similar things.

Quandrant Standard Edition

How Does Benchmarking Work?

A device is subjected to a number of process/tasks which are universal and thus the result is declared based on how well the device performs while performing the same. These tasks differ from the tasks you perform on the device daily. There are a number of process that will be performed but some notable processes are raw processor speed, storage access speeds, level of detail, FPS (Frame Per Second), 3D performance and number of polygons that can be drawn in a second.

Is Cheating Possible In Benchmarking?

its natural for a human being to cheat! and some people do cheat so that their device gives a better benchmarking result. its obvious isn't it? when people are gullible about benchmarking and how it works manufactures tend to sell their product by cheating on these results and potraying that their device is x% faster than the other device.

How To Cheat/Inflate The Benchmarking Results?

By rooting and installing custom ROMs or jailbreaking (iOS). Also by increasing memory space, RAM etc.
Sometimes manufacturers overclock the  CPU , i.e overclocking a 1.5GHz CPU to run at 1.9 GHz.
So its obvious that the results shown while benchmarking the device is more when the CPU runs at 1.9 GHz than 1.5 GHz. Results depend on number of other factors like cache size, OS running etc
Ars Technica reported that Samsung had written a specific code which was in the file "DVFShelper.java" into the galaxy note 3 which contained a list of benchmarking apps and hence boosting the performance by 20%. This is one of the many marketing "strategies" of Samsung.

Is Benchmarking A Constant Number?

HTC one benchmark result

As you can clearly see from the picture, when i ran a AnTuTu benchmark on my HTC one it put up a result of 19170. But in the global rankings the same HTC one is given a better rank. Hence proving benchmarking results are not at all a constant. For instance a freshly rebooted phone performs better compared to a phone which is not rebooted in a long time.

How To Benchmark A Phone?

There are several apps to get the job done. Some are OS specific while some are universal/cross platform.

AnTuTu Benchmark
Here is a list of few notable apps.

For Android devices
1) Quandrant standard edition
2) AnTuTu benchmark
3) Vellamo
4) Neocore

Cross platform apps ( iOS and Android )
1) Linpack
2) Geekbench 2
3) SunSpider
4) 3DMark

Vellamo Mobile Benchmark

Concluding, Benchamarking results are not completely reliable but if it is performed several times with different apps and comparing it with phones of same specification then by averaging the results we can get an idea as to how our device performs with the competition.

Snapchat CEO turns down $3 billion facebook offer. This is the 'formal' letter to 'zuckerbro'

Yo Zuckerbro,

I wanted to hit you up personally to tell you how gutted I am that stuff didn’t work out between Facebook and Snapchat. It’s a bummer, but Facebook just isn’t the smexy young hookup we’re looking for, $3 billion or not. Sorry to be a buzzkill.

I’m sure you get it, brosepher. You can probably still remember being a hot-to-trot brogrammer, back in the day, when you were still 23. Remember how, when you weren’t hella old, shit just kind of came to you, like how you had your hand on the pulse of digital innovation, or how your parents gave you a brand-new Escalade, and then pulled strings so you could park it next to your high school?

We both know what it’s was like to be a little too badass for college — you for Harvard, and me for Stanford. We also both know how to party hard in Palo Alto. I bet your ragers with Sean Parker are pretty similar to the stuff that got my frat, Kappa Sigma, kicked off campus.

And then there’s the fact that we’re both total geniuses. You came up with Facemash to look at pictures of chicks, and I invented Picaboo so hotties would send me nude selfies. You crushed it, and after one thing led to another, your company became the new hotness. But then your classmates got all greedy, and started claiming that maybe you kind of screwed your certified bros out of a lot of money. What even is that? We’ve both been there, brogellan. Good thing we’re too rich to care.

That’s why you’ll totally understand that the reason Snapchat couldn’t take your money is that — no offense, bro — it’s ‘cause even though we don’t have any kind of revenue stream, in a few years, our mascot, Ghostface Chillah, is going to be all kind of dancing on Facebook’s grave. I’m sorry, but kids just don’t do Facebook anymore, Zuck. You’re like Tom from Myspace. Or what was that other thing our parents had? Friendster? Did they have a mascot?

I get it. It’s hard out there for a disruptive technologist pimp. Not everyone can create an app that perfectly captures the ephemeral and fluid nature of human communication. After all, aren’t sexts just back-alley flashing made digital? Doesn’t the transience of Snapchat’s dick pics mirror that of Anthony Weiner’s political career?

But bro. Bro. Don’t sweat it. I am like 100% certain that your next startup will be huge. If you haven’t come up with an idea, you should totally start shopping around for one. I hear Uber drivers have some bitchin’ schemes these days.

Boom.

Warm brogards,

- Evan Spiegel,
Snapchat co-founder and CEO

This is a satire letter. But it was intelligent of Evan Spiegel to turn down 3 billion. As a CEO he is doing his job well.

Huawei beats LG in global market phone share.

Samsung and Apple continue to be at the top of global smartphone market share, but there’s a new number 3. Huawei has overtaken LG, according to estimates from Strategy Analytics. Huawei now owns 5.1% of sales, while LG is at 4.8%, a switch in positions from Quarter 2. This isn’t the first time Huawei has appeared at this position, but while LG continued to grow during Q2, Huawei grew even faster. Researchers attribute the rise to the Ascend P6 and the mainstream G610, particularly in China.

Otherwise, Samsung still leads the world with a 35.2% share, with Apple still in second place with 13.4%.

According to the latest research from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) service, global smartphone shipments grew 45 percent annually to reach a record 251 million units in the third quarter of 2013. Samsung captured a record 35 percent share of all smartphone volumes worldwide, while Huawei jumped into third place in the rankings.

Global smartphone shipments grew 45 percent annually from 172.8 million units in Q3 2012 to 251.4 million in Q3 2013. This was the first time ever that smartphone shipments exceeded a quarter-billion units in a single quarter. Smartphones accounted for 6 in 10 of all mobile phones shipped worldwide. The smartphone industry’s robust growth is being driven by strong demand for LTE models in developed regions like the US and 3G devices in emerging markets such as China.

Samsung grew 55 percent annually and shipped a record 88.4 million smartphones worldwide, capturing a record 35 percent marketshare in Q3 2013. Samsung shipped over two times more smartphones than Apple during the quarter. While shipments of the flagship Galaxy S4 model softened, solid demand for the new Note 3 phablet and for mass-market devices like the Galaxy Y helped to lift Samsung’s volumes.

Apple shipped 33.8 million iPhones worldwide in Q3 2013, up from 26.9 million a year earlier. Apple grew just 26 percent annually during Q3 2013, which is around half the overall smartphone industry average of 45 percent. Apple’s global smartphone marketshare has dipped noticeably from 16 percent to 13 percent during the past year. Nonetheless, we expect Apple to rebound sharply and regain share in the upcoming fourth quarter of 2013 due to high demand for its new iPhone 5s model.

Huawei was a star performer as global shipments grew 67 percent annually to 12.7 million units in Q3 2013. Huawei captured 5 percent marketshare and became the world’s third largest smartphone vendor. The popular P6 and G610 models have been among the main drivers of Huawei’s success. Huawei remains very strong at home in China, but its position is less robust in other major markets like the US and Europe. Huawei will need to expand aggressively in the American and European markets if it wants to seriously challenge the big two of Samsung and Apple next year.

Other findings from our research include:

* LG shipped 12.0 million smartphones worldwide for 5 percent marketshare in Q3 2013. LG grew 71 percent annually, making it the fastest-growing vendor among the top five brands. LG has been expanding rapidly in Europe, but China and India remain weak spots;

* Lenovo shipped 10.8 million smartphones worldwide for 4 percent marketshare and fifth position in Q3 2013. Lenovo is popular among mass-market consumers in China and it is expanding internationally. Two of the world’s top five smartphone vendors came from China — Lenovo and Huawei.

The full report, Huawei Reaches Third Place as Global Smartphone Shipments Reach Quarter-Billion Units in Q3 2013, is published by the Strategy Analytics Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) service, details of which can be found here:

The new version of Google play store 4.4.21 is rolling out. Since such updates will take a while for everyone to get hands on it.
There is not much difference with the new update however a few features have been redesigned.bringing Google plus style side navigation. It also allows users to easily switch accounts. It is not completely redesigned. But this update confirms that android kitkat is round the corner.

BBM is HERE

BlackBerry messenger is finally here and available on playstore and appstore.
But available only to people with blackberry id who had used bbm once atleast with the id.

At first impression it is more smooth than the leaked version. After popularizing instant messaging blackberry, making bbm cross platform has finally taken the right step.
With over 60 million active users bbm will spread it's field to other platforms thus posing heavy competition to whatsapp and hangouts.BlackBerry has tried really hard in bringing the BB10 user interface to android and ios version, though bbm channels is not there but it is expected and sure to come in the coming updates.

There is no doubt this app will be a hit.
Because there will be no timestamp only delivered and read. Security reasons that was lacking in whatsapp is overcome by bbm.

Say good bye to whatsapp here comes BBM.
